Creator/Contributor:

Strohmaier, Erwin, 1911-, creator

Abstract:

Schroeder and Strohmaier family papers date mainly from the 1880's to 1920's. Family correspondence consists of letters from soprano Therese Caroline Tietjens and from Karl Marx, love letters between Jacob Strohmaier and Clara Schroeder, and family letters. Other papers include financial, legal, and tax documents relating to their Clayton St., San Francisco home; other records (marriage license, stock certificate, school papers, etc.); newspaper clippings of local interest; and ephemera. Volumes of Erwin Strohmaier's reminiscences (recorded in the 1980's and 1990's) relate memories of family, childhood, life in San Francisco, early camping trips and other automobile trips in northern California and Oregon, photography, work at the Gernhardt-Strohmaier Co. store, and World War II experiences. Volumes include reproductions of documents and photographs in other parts of the collection, and there is some duplication of chapters between volumes. Dates of volumes: v. 1, circa 1911-1942 (many photos); v. 2, 1994 (autobiography); v. 3, 1914-1938 (vacation scrapbook); v. 4, 1879-1945 (William Schroeder and California art glassworks); v. 5, 1943-1945 (Strohmaier's stay in England during World War II); v. 6, 1941-1942 (World War II). Oversize folder 1: certificates, marriage license, 1882-1893; oversize folder 2: newspaper clippings, circa 1921-1963.
California Art Glass Bending and Cutting Co. Works papers date from 1881 to 1913. Legal documents include a patent, articles of incorporation, and agreements. Miscellaneous financial items include stock certificates, loan paperwork, a few bills, and a balance sheet. A small amount of correspondence and a few inventory sheets are also present. Other items include a draft of a speech given by Schroeder on art glass, documents relating to the company's participation in the California Midwinter International Exposition (1894), and the Paris Exposition universelle internationale (1900). Other miscellaneous items include business cards, publicity, news clippings, and copies of photographs of the company.
Gernhardt-Strohmaier Co. papers from 1925 to 1960 are mainly advertising and other publicity for the company's stove and appliance store in Oakland. Also includes items relating to local trade associations and other industry activities, a small amount of correspondence, and copies of letterhead.

William H. Schroeder was a California artist of German heritage who owned the California Art Glass Bending and Cutting Works in San Francisco. He married San Francisco native Julia Breuer in 1882. Their daughter Clara married Jacob Strohmaier (also involved in California Art Glass B. & C. Works) in 1910. Jacob later co-owned the Gernhardt-Strohmaier Co. stove and appliance stores, and ran their Oakland store. Erwin Jack Strohmaier, in addition to helping his father Jacob in business, was a photographer for the Air Force in World War II, and had an interest in California and family history.
